This custom museum display showcases an Authentic Spanish Colonial 'King Philip III' Pirate currency dating from early 1600 AD.

The Golden Age of Piracy spans the 1650s to the late 1720s - The buccaneering period of approximately 1650 to 1680, characterized by Anglo-French seamen based on Jamaica (English capture from Spain in 1655) and Tortuga attacking Spanish colonies and shipping in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.

Factors contributing to piracy during the Golden Age included the rise in quantities of valuable cargoes being shipped to Europe over vast ocean areas, reduced European navies in certain regions, the training and experience that many sailors had gained in European navies (particularly the Royal Navy), and ineffective government in European overseas colonies. The colonial powers at the time constantly fought with pirates and engaged in several notable battles and other related events.

Most famous bucaneer of this era - Henry Morgan, who raided the Spaniards and took Panama City. He was to be executed in England but was instead knighted and made governor of Jamaica. He died a natural death in 1688.

King Philip III's reign remains a critical period in Spanish history - known in Spain as Philip the Pious, Philip's political reputation abroad has been largely negative – an 'undistinguished and insignificant man,' a 'miserable monarch,' whose 'only virtue appeared to reside in a total absence of vice. For many, the decline of Spain can be dated to the economic difficulties that set in during the early years of his reign.

The reverse (tails), depicts a castle to commemorate the family of Castille, the founding families of Spain.

The obverse (heads), depicts the a dancing lion to commemorate the family of the Leon.
